MARLIANI, GIOVANNI BATTISTA. Topographia antiquae Romae. 1534

MARLIANI, GIOVANNI BATTISTA. Topographia antiquae Romae. Edited with a prefatory letter by François Rabelais. [8], 313, [14] pages. 8vo, 18th-century Italian vellum; contents toned with mostly moderate foxing, margins trimmed slightly entering some headlines, early signature or inscription imperfectly washed out of *2 and a1. Lyon: Sebastian Gryphius, 1534

  • Notes: first rabelais edition, published the same year as the original edition. While accompanying his friend and patron Jean Du Bellay on a diplomatic mission to Italy, Rabelais conceived the idea of writing a descriptive work on ancient Rome, but found that Marliani had already done so. He instead had the book reprinted at Lyon with a dedicatory letter to Du Bellay. Adams M609; Schudt 602.
