  • Notes: First edition, first issue of the first separate publication of King's "Letter from Birmingham Jail." It was issued by the American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker organization, and includes a one-page introduction praising this "eloquent expression of the nonviolent approach to restructuring of our social order." The 12 April 1963 letter by 8 Alabama clergymen which occasioned King's response is also appended. Later printings by the AFSC are so noted on the rear wrapper.
