(MARTIN LUTHER KING.) Typed notes on Dr. King's sermon on "The Dimensions of a Complete Life" at an Illinois church. 2 typescript pages (one with only 2 lines) on one sheet of looseleaf paper, 11 x 8½ inches; uneven toning, minor wear, hole reinforcements added in margin. Evanston, IL, 19 May 1963

  • Notes: Martin Luther King was invited to give a sermon at the largely white First Methodist Church of Evanston on 19 May 1963, as the congregation and Rev. Dow Kirkpatrick were commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. King spoke that day on "The Dimensions of a Complete Life." This was likely a variation on "The Three Dimensions of a Complete Life," a favorite sermon of King's; he had preached it as his first trial sermon in Birmingham in 1954. These summarized notes were likely taken by someone in attendance, and then typed out soon afterward. The occasional strange language is probably the result of a confused listener, rather than Dr. King's own word choices. Most notably, the notes have King using the bizarre phrase "lymph of life" twice: "The crisis in race relations exist today because whites failed to find lymph of life. If they would only add breadth to life, life would be different." If King really talked like that . . . we probably would all still need to work on the third Monday of January every year. The scribe undoubtedly misheard "length of life," a phrase King often contrasted with "breadth of life."

King's visit to Evanston was discussed in the Chicago Tribune of 20 May 1963. We don't know exactly what he told the Methodists of Evanston on that day, but these notes are interesting evidence despite their shortcomings.
