MARTIN SCHONGAUER
The Crucifixion.
Engraving, circa 1480. 196x151 mm; 7 3/4x6 inches, thread margins. Ex-collection Wilhelm Gottlieb Becker (Lugt 324, verso) and Hirschler (Lugt Supplement 633a, verso). A very good, well-inked and evenly printed impression of this scarce print on thin cream laid paper.
According to Shestack, the print should date around 1480 due to similarities between the current work and The Crucifixion from the Passion series (Bartsch 17), (Shestack, Fifteenth Century Engravings of Northern Europe, Washington, DC, 1967, catalogue number 63).
An extremely scarce print; we have found only one other impression at auction in the past 20 years. Bartsch 24; Lehrs 13.
