Mary Vieira was a Brazilian sculptor, and the first Brazilian artist to win the São Paulo Art Biennial. In 1951, Mary Vieira moved to Europe where she met Italian poet and critic Carlo Belloli, who later became her husband. Upon settling in Switzerland, she was invited by Max Bill to participate in the last exhibition of the Swiss Group Allianz - a group that advocated Bill's theories of concrete art and the importance of color. Vieira explored dynamism in sculpture, but emphasized interdisciplinarity as a key artistic principle, also creating prints, photographs and posters. Many of her artwork installations have been placed in public spaces. In this innovative and minimalist poster for an international architecture exhibition, Viera (one of the show's organizers) uses the same green of the Brazil flag, which represents the country's fields and forests. The Interbau exhibition publicized European architectural designs for the new capital of Brazil, for which Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer eventually designed civic buildings and Lucio Costa planned the layout. Using the latitude and longitude points printed in white at the edges of the poster, we can identify the complementary red square in Viera's design as the capital city, Brasilia. Graphic Art p. 75.
