(MARYLAND.) Ole Singstad's correspondence file on the birth of the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel.

(MARYLAND.) Ole Singstad's correspondence file on the birth of the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. 69 pages, mostly about 11 x 8 1/2 inches or larger; in generally strong condition, bound with a metal fastener, consisting of: 3 typed drafts of letters sent by Singstad to the Baltimore engineering firm J.E. Greiner Company (plus 2 duplicates); 7 letters received by Singstad from Greiner engineers; a 12-page typescript titled "Outline of Engineering Procedure in Connection with the Maryland Bridge and Tunnel Program," 20 May 1938; and 31 pages of other notes and memoranda. New York and Baltimore, August-September 1938 and March 1944

  • Notes: The Harbor Tunnel was the first vehicular crossing of Baltimore's harbor. It opened to traffic in 1957, but had been in the planning stages for many years. This collection consists mostly of Singstad's notes and correspondence with a Baltimore engineering firm, discussing the tunnel's expected costs for construction and operation in great detail. Also included are a record of boring samples done in the harbor mud, and some tables on the costs for the similar Lincoln and Holland Tunnel projects in New York. Provenance: Gift from Singstad to engineer and collector Gerald J. Levy.
