Eliezer Freeman.

Letter describing his pursuit of an escaped servant across Cape Cod with a team of several Indians.

Eastham, MA, 3 August 1725
Autograph Note Signed to unknown recipient. One page, 4¾ x 7¾ inches; folds, moderate dampstaining; uncut.

  • Notes: "I took a huing-cry at Cornell Otises and have made serch after your man servant from Plymmouth to ye Cape, but I cannot heare nothing of him at present, but I shall continu my persute after yr servent untill I here sumthing from your selfe, and I beleive that if he is anywhare our way, I shall find him, for I have imployed severl Indiens to seek him out, and if I or thay can heare of him, I shall bring him directly up to your self, and if you find him any wahre your way, you may remember to take 20 shilings for my trobel and charge of ye huing-cry, and my troble of travil, and my imploying ye Indians."

    The note is signed Eliezer Freeman, most likely the Eleazar Freeman (1701-1784) of Eastham. The note is inscribed in a later hand on verso: "R E Dwelly, Hanover." This is likely Robert Eells Dwelley (1825-1920) of Hanover, MA near Plymouth, perhaps a descendant of the recipient.
