(MASSACHUSETTS.) Family papers of Boston innkeeper John Andrews.

(MASSACHUSETTS.) Family papers of Boston innkeeper John Andrews. 69 items, various sizes and conditions. Vp, 1820-65

  • Notes: Includes 27 letters to Boston innkeeper John Andrews (1790-1872) and family members, 1820-1865, from a variety of correspondents. Of particular interest are a series of 4 letters from John''s brother and sister Henry and Emmeline Andrews, who had settled in western New York. Her 14 February 1829 letter bears the red inked postmark of Palmyra, NY, just a year before the Book of Mormon was published in the same place. She was living in Pultneyville 18 miles from Palmyra and does not mention any encounters with Joseph Smith. Henry''s 10 November 1830 letter is also dated and postmarked in Palmyra. Two other June 1830 letters are dated only "Home Lodge" and are not postmarked, but were apparently written in Pultneyville. The letters also include 13 letters dated 1866 received from John''s son Daniel Webster Andrews (1835-1894) of Boston, a Civil War naval veteran then serving as an ensign aboard a vessel in the Chesapeake Bay. The lot also includes a Civil War letter from Corporal George R. Morse of the 2nd Massachusetts dated Harper''s Ferry, WV, 19 August 1861. Also included are a folder of 41 land and legal documents, and a diary / daybook kept by John Andrews from 1851 to 1856. Provenance: John''s son Charles T. Andrews (1830-1905), and Charles''s granddaughter Elizabeth Blaisdell Andrews (1911-2004), from whose estate these papers were acquired. Eagle-eyed readers may note a close similarity to the preceding lot, which was found at the same estate sale by a different consignor.
