(MASSACHUSETTS.) [Increase Mather.] A Narrative of the Miseries of New-England, by Reason of an Arbitrary Government Erected There, as published in "A Sixth Collection of Papers Relating to the Present Juncture of Affairs in England."[2], 34 pages. 4to, 8 x 6¼ inches, stitched; small notch to inner margin, minor soiling, lacking initial and final blank leaves as usual; uncut. London: Richard Janeway, 1689

  • Notes: First edition thus, after the essay appeared in a 1687 London edition and 1688 Boston edition. In this essay, Harvard president Increase Mather protests against the 1686 consolidation of the New England colonies with New York and New Jersey as the "Dominion of New England," under the unpopular rule of Sir Edmund Andros with no local representation: "poor People have been groaning under . . . a Dispotick and Absolute Power." Andros was soon overthrown, and Mather led the negotiations for a new charter two years later to form the Province of Massachusetts Bay. Mather's 6-page essay is one of 10 collected in this slim volume, covering a variety of topics. Church 714; European Americana 689/168; Sabin 81492 (see also 46708, 9372). Second state with corrected catchword "made" on page 31.
