(MASSACHUSETTS.) Photograph of a Franklin celebration in downtown Boston. Albumen print, 14 x 10 1/2 inches, on original plain mount; moderate foxing, inked caption on mount recto. [Boston], 17 September 1856

  • Notes: This parade was held to celebrate the unveiling of a large Benjamin Franklin statue which still stands in from of Boston''s old City Hall--the first statue of a person erected in the city. This view shows the procession heading southeast along Court Street through a throng of spectators toward the Old State House, visible in the background. Large American flags have been hung from a line across the street. A very similar view is held by Tufts University, credited to Southworth & Hawes.
