Notes: Boston manufacturer John Simmons (1796-1870) included a clause in his will to "found and endow an institution to be called the Simmons Female College." A charter was not granted until 1899, and the school opened its doors to students in 1902. It still thrives today as Simmons College.
Rowe served as one of the trustees of the Simmons estate. This collection includes the executors'' manuscript annual reports, 1873-1891; Rowe''s annotated copies of the printed will; and his files on a 1914 Massachusetts suit by Simmons''s descendants against the college. Also included are proofs, correspondence and related papers for Rowe''s 1933 book, "The Ancestry of John Simmons, Founder of Simmons College," and an unidentified photograph. -
