(MASSACHUSETTS.) Seymour; engraver. Early trade card for John H. Merckell's Variety Fur-Store in Boston. Illustrated card, 3 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches, on laid paper; toned and lightly foxed, untrimmed. Boston, circa 1790s

  • Notes: John Henry Merckell''s store at 69 Newbury Street offered "all kinds of Muffs & Trimmings in the neatest manner, and at the most reasonable terms." He appeared at this address as a furrier in the 1796 and 1798 Boston directories; he had moved on to a different address by 1800. The trade card is illustrated with a fur muff, as well as the measuring tools of his trade. The engraver was probably Joseph H. Seymour, who was active in Boston during this period.
