(MASSACHUSETTS.) [Wilson, William?] Chronicles of New England.

(MASSACHUSETTS.) [Wilson, William?] Chronicles of New England. 2 pamphlets ("Chap. 999" and "Chap. 1000") bound in one. 8, 8 pages. 8vo, stitched; dampstaining, edge wear; uncut; early owner's inscription on first page. [Greenfield, MA?], circa 1826

  • Notes: A satire written in Biblical style. It describes competition between the Hartford-based shipping merchants who plied their trade along the Connecticut River, and a rival group of New Haven investors who bypassed them with a canal to Massachusetts. The two groups faced off at a meeting in Greenfield, MA by presenting their proposals to the townsfolk. According to Sheldon's History of Deerfield, "a Greenfield wit, perhaps William Wilson, reports the Greenfield convention in the Chronicles of New England, chap. 999" (page 911). The pamphlet alludes to the icebound steamer Barnet, placing the date of composition in 1826. Original owner Richard Colton (1787-1872) was a political figure in nearby Northfield, MA. Quite scarce, and interesting as well. Not beautiful, but who among us is perfect? Not in Sabin, Shaw & Shoemaker, or WorldCat. Two copies of Chapter 999 have been traced, but Chapter 1000 appears to be otherwise unknown.
