MAUGHAM, WILLIAM SOMERSET. Autograph Letter Signed, "Willie," to his nephew Robin Maugham,

MAUGHAM, WILLIAM SOMERSET. Autograph Letter Signed, "Willie," to his nephew Robin Maugham, expressing gladness at hearing of his safe return, relating his plans to travel through France to England, reporting on damage done to the house from bombing, asking for information about English travel restrictions, and declining to send a story to be published. 2 pages, 4to, written on the recto and verso of a single sheet; "Parkers Ferry" stationery; folds. With the original envelope. Yemasee, SC, 21 March [from postmark: 1945?]

  • Notes: ". . . I shall . . . go on to St. Jean . . . where we can stay while I arrange about making such repairs to the house as are needed. I have recently heard that an incendiary dropped in the garden, burnt out four hundred square yards of it, so that will have to be replanted. . . . I am a little anxious about coming to England under the present restrictions since it would be a great nuisance if I won't be allowed to leave when I want to. Can you tell me anything about this? . . .
". . . You ask me about a story. I don't believe a story of mine would keep you--besides which my stories are much longer than anything you would have room for; . . . I couldn't very well offer you one since the American magazine that is buying those I am writing now buys also the English rights. . . . [T]hey pay me $10,000 a story. . . ."
