Maurice Beck Always In Touch/London Underground. 1931 40 x 24.75 inches. Waterlow & Sons, London. Condition A-: restored paper loss inupper left corner; repaired tears and minor creases in margins. This image is out of a series of four that were commissioned to Maurice Beck by the London Underground in 1931 Beck, who was the head photographer of British Vogue in the 1920s, created numerous photographic magazine covers and is credited with having designed at least 17 posters for London Transport. Most noticeably, his photomontage talents were seen on a giant billboard in London for TheEmpire Marketing Board in 1933 In this poster, which is extolling thevirtues of telephones in the London Underground, Beck uses black and white photographs taken of the insides of a subway tunnel, over whichhe places a picture of the telephone, eye-catchingly outlined in red. This poster goes a long way in bringing us into the mysterious atmosphere of the underground tunnels, giving us an "insider view". Very rare. ref. Commercial Art, vol. 10, 1931, The Studio, Leicester Square, London - reproduced p. 171
