Typed Letter Signed, to the Editor of the Kennebec Journal, a form letter, regarding a controversy about an impostor passing himself off as the real inventor of the Maxim gun. "Private" is written at the head of the page and the recipient is written into a space made for the purpose, both in holograph. 3 pages, 8vo, each page on a separate sheet. London, 17 September 1900

  • Notes: "I am the Maxim who invented the automatic gun which is now in use throughout the whole world . . . .
    ". . . [A] certain party who has changed his name so as to resemble mine as closely as possible, and who only came on the scene at a later period, has written and lectured extensively in the States, and described himself as the inventor of the Maxim Gun, Maxim powder, and so forth. . . ."
