(New York): (Peder Bonnier Gallery), (2000)

  • Notes: This book was published on the occasion of McGinley's solo exhibition in April/May 2000 at the Peder Bonnier Gallery located in the historic 420 West Broadway building, which once housed the Leo Castelli and Sonnabend Galleries. The cover features his father, P.J. McGinley with a black eye and the contents showcase friends hanging out in the photographer's apartment and indulging in sexual or drug related activities.

At the time, McGinley, who was studying graphic design, was familiar with desktop publishing. He purchased a negative scanner and printed a hundred copies of the book on an Epson printer. With the assistance of his friends they assembled the images in the book using double stick tape. About 30 copies were sold at the show and the remainder were distributed to galleries, magazines and artists.

The first people to respond to McGinley's mailing was Index. As a only a junior in college, the agency gave him a steady stream of assignments. When Index Books was established about 3 months later, his book was its inaugural publication. A copy was sent to Slyvia Wolf, then curator of photography at the Whitney Museum of American Art. After meeting with McGinley and viewing his work, she offered him a show. At the age of 24, he became the youngest artist to have a solo show at the Whtiney Museum.
