McLean's Monthly Sheet of Caricatures, No. 32.

Hand-colored engraved plate, 10 1/4x14 1/4 inches; small diagonal crease at the top right corner, 2 small repairs to the top margin, some discoloration to the lower left corner. London, 1834

  • Notes: A bitter political cartoon, prompted by the 1834 act emancipating slaves in the West Indies and the Reform Bill of 1832 which brought this about. A rather "bloated" politician stands in a barrel, his arms outstretched. To his left, an emancipated black family and friends celebrate with dancing. To his right is an impoverished white family.
