MEDICINE CUSHING, HARVEY. Archive of 20 TLsS and one ALS to Agnes Willard Bartlett. 1927-39

CUSHING, HARVEY. Archive of 20 TLsS and one ALS to Agnes Willard Bartlett, great-niece of Elisha Bartlett. One page each, except for the 1 1/2-page letter of 27 July 1929, small 8vo and 4to, on Peter Bent Brigham Hospital letterhead through 1932 and Yale University School of Medicine letterhead thereafter. Boston, 1927-1932; New Haven, 1934-39

  • Notes: In addition to his bibliophilic focus on Andreas Vesalius, Cushing became interested in the life and work of Elisha Bartlett, the New England physician known for his writings on fevers and on the philosophy of medicine. He began to correspond with Bartlett''s great-niece after she wrote to him about his biography of Sir William Osler, another admirer of Bartlett. The letters offered here acknowledge her periodic gifts to him of much of the material forming his collection of Bartlett papers now at Yale. Some of the later letters allude to Cushing''s health problems, and the last 2 date from February 1939, several months before his death. See Fulton, Harvey Cushing, page 677.
