[6], 100 leaves; lacks A3 (with large woodcut of childbirth scene on recto, repeated on G4v). 4to, contemporary vellum, front cover stamped AVB (above) and 1587 (below), binding heavily wormed; contents foxed, scattered stains and early marginalia, few wormholes in blank outer margins throughout, opening leaves frayed along edges, clean tear in L4, front free endpaper lacking.   • Notes: Later edition of the 1554 Latin adaptation of Eucharius Rösslin's 1513 Der swangern Frawen und Hebammen Roszgarten, the first textbook of midwifery. "This contains the first true anatomical pictures in an obstetrics book. Rueff described smooth-edged forceps for delivery of a live baby, preceding Chamberlen, and a toothed forceps for extraction of the dead foetus"--Garrison-Morton 6141 (1554 edition in German).
