consisting of Burwell's own account of his case of chylo-thorax, with descriptions of his treatment and cure; various letters; a long congratulatory letter upon his graduation from Jefferson Medical College in 1907; a long manuscript essay on "Characteristics of the Period of Mid-adolescence," as well as other papers on arterial rheumatism, etc. should be seen.   • Notes: Thomas Burwell was a resident of Philadelphia, a graduate of Lincoln University (1900), Jefferson Medical College (1907), and worked at the Frederick Douglass Hospital. He was chairman of the Medical Section of the National Medical Association (the African-American equivalent of the AMA), and was an early supporter of the NAACP. In May of 1922, Burwell traveled with J. Max Barber (one of the founders of the Niagara movement) to lay a wreath on the grave of John Brown. While there, Barber gave a speech against Jim Crow segregation and lynching.
