  • Notes: first edition. James Still was the brother of William Still, noted Underground Railroad conductor and author. Without formal education, James began to make home remedies and used his earnings to purchase medical books. He became known as the "Black Doctor" or "Doctor of the Pines"--see Encyclopedia of Black America, page 809.
