Peregrinatio Hierosolymitana.

Dillingen: Excudebat Joannes Mayer, 1580.

First edition, small octavo, decorative arrangement of printer's ornaments to title page; final blank present; bound in later half parchment and paste-paper boards (old fore-edge tab to title page; contents washed; generally good); 6 1/4 x 4 in.

Adams M-1035.

Swiss-born von Meggen made his pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1542. One of his stops was the monastery of Saint Francis in Candia on Crete. He reports that the saint's spirit was present on the island and at the religious house, and that Saint Francis himself had turned the salty water in their well into sweet, drinkable water. In 1546, von Meggen was summoned by the Pope to serve as Commandant of the Swiss Guards. For a fuller biography, see Robert Royal's The Pope's Army: 500 Years of the Papal Swiss Guard, New York: Crossroad Publishing, 2006.
