MELISH, JOHN. Map of the United States with the Contiguous British & Spanish Possessions. Large engraved map, dissected in 40 sections and linen-backed, 895x1425 mm overall; hand-colored; new linen backing, margins slightly trimmed, minor staining and browning, a few small areas of abrasions but with only very minor loss. With the original statistical table mounted on verso, but defective. Philadelphia, 1816
- Notes: the first large depiction of the continental united states produced in america. The second state with the Vallance and Tanner imprint below the title and without additional nomenclature in Ohio or Indiana. This is the earliest state to show the entire map, with the unobtainable first state being a proof. "An exquisite map, it distinguished Melish as the leading American map publisher of the second decade and placed American maps on equal footing with those produced by the prestigious firms in London and Paris. Incorporating dat from state and military maps as these became available, Melish frequently revised and corrected the plates, limiting each printing to 100 copies"--Schwartz & Ehrenberg, page 238.
