MENCKEN, H.L. Small archive of 13 items Signed, or Signed and Inscribed, to actress and friend Aileen Pringle, including 8 Letters Signed and 5 Photographs Signed. Most items signed "HLM." The letters, on various mostly personal subjects, some with the original envelope. The photographs, portraits of Mencken, most 8x10 inches. Format and condition vary. Vp, 1938-46

  • Notes: The letters: 20 June [1938]: ". . . New York must be a wreck today. All the Jews bet on Louis and then boycotted the fight. Considering the odds, they probably lost millions. The knock-out will no doubt encourage Hitler to cross the Rhine. I hope so. I'll certainly like to see another war before I die."
    6 February 1940: ". . . It would be hard to tell you what ails me, save to say that it embraces a large group of senile malaises. I am advised to try prayer, but can't get rid of my suspicion that it is buncombe. Thus atheism turns upon me and devours me. . . ."
    14 October 1944: ". . . I hate to sow the seeds of domestic discord, but I can't help warning you against his spaghetti. At this very moment no less than eleven head of Italians are in the Baltimore deathhouse awaiting hanging for poisoning their wives. . . . Keep your eye on the kitchen while he is in it. . . ."
