Mercury Blueprint, Cable Assy - Capsule to Heat Shield. A rare blueprint by the Mercury capsule manufacturer McDonnell Aircraft Corporation. Illustrated is one of the cable assemblies that would assist separation and deployment of the heat shield away from the capsule prior to splashdown to form the "landing bag." This "bag" would cushion the capsule impact as it hit the ocean's surface. Approximately 17x22 inches with 2 folds and a date stamp: "Reference Only, APR 10 1961." signed by gordon cooper with the additional inscription "Faith 7." McDonnell Aircraft Corp., 1961
- Notes: Very few Mercury capsule blueprints exist today. The policy was to transfer the images to microfilm and destroy the originals to reduce the storage space the blueprints would require.
