    Notes:
Mervin Jules was an American painter and printmaker born in Baltimore, Maryland. He studied at the Maryland Institute of Fine and Applied Arts (MICA) and later at the Art Students League in New York under Thomas Hart Benton. He held his first New York solo exhibition at the Hudson Walker gallery in 1937 when he was just 25, quickly emerging as a notable figure in American printmaking.

Jules was also a committed and lifelong educator. He taught at the Museum of Modern Art and served as artist-in-residence at Smith College, where he eventually chaired the Art Department. In 1970, he became Chair of the Art Department at City College of New York. A recipient of multiple MacDowell fellowships, Jules exhibited widely and is represented in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Princeton University Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and MoMA. He lived and worked in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he remained active until his passing in 1994.
