  • Notes: first mexican edition of a work first published in Rome in 1561. The author was a Spanish Jesuit, the first Jesuit to be made a cardinal. This commentary on Aristotle is believed to be the first work by a Jesuit to be published in New Spain (see Backer-Sommervogel, page 8:65). Antonio Ricardo is here granted the exclusive rights to publish works for the Jesuit''s college in Mexico, San Pedro y San Pablo. Ricardo, the fifth printer in Mexico''s history, soon became the first printer in South America when he relocated to Lima at the Jesuits'' request. (Woodbridge, pages 21-22, 41-42).
In addition to a woodcut Jesuit device on the title page, this book features woodcut diagrams on leaves 82v, 84v, 87, 89v, 95v, 123, and 123v. This work was issued with a 50-leaf appendix titled "Reverendi Do. Francisci Maurolyci, Abbatis Messanensis, atque mathematici celeberrimi. De Sphaera. Liber unus," not present here. None known at auction since 1906, and only 4 copies in OCLC--three of them incomplete. Garcia Icazbalceta 80; Medina, Mexico I:86b; Palau 333067; Sabin 96108; Wagner, Mexican Imprints in the Huntington Library 80.
