(MEXICAN IMPRINT--1797.) Decree by the Inquisition banning or restricting 29 books, including a subversive tract from Philadelphia. Letterpress broadside, 23 3/4 x 17 inches, printed on 2 conjoined sheets, signed in type by Juan de Mier y Villar and 3 other inquisitors with their manuscript rubrics, with paper seal; folds, minor foxing and wear including a 1/2-inch hole in lower margin; uncut. Mexico, 28 July 1797

  • Notes: An annotated list of 29 books which have been prohibited or restricted by the inquisition. Most notable among them is "Desengaño del Hombre" or "The Federal Politician" published in Philadelphia by James Philip Puglia, an American citizen and immigrant from Italy. Puglia''s work, first published in Spanish in Philadelphia in 1794, offered challenges to the Spanish monarchy; a 1795 English edition listed Alexander Hamilton among its subscribers. The book was listed in the most severely censored portion of the broadside, "Prohibidos aun para los que tienen licencia" (prohibited even for those who are licenced), explaining that the words are "sediciosa en sumo grado, estar llena de falsedades, calumnias y de blasfemias contra la obediencia y respeto que prescriben las Santas Escrituras" (seditious in the highest degree, full of falsehoods, slander and blasphemies against the obedience and respect prescribed by the Holy Scriptures). 2 examples in OCLC; not in Medina, Mexico.
