(MEXICAN MANUSCRIPTS.) Compilation of religious opinions titled "Questiones regulares." [64] manuscript leaves in a variety of hands: 20 unnumbered leaves, then leaves numbered 1-65 including several blanks. Folio, contemporary vellum, moderate wear; 10 leaves apparently removed from the numbered sequence, one leaf defective, and another detached, intermittent dampstain and moderate wear. Mexico, 1572-1626 and undated

  • Notes: A manuscript compilation of answers to religious questions both spiritual and practical, written by a variety of correspondents from different religious orders. Sections address whether Indians might be required to work on religious feast days (leaf 23), and whether they may they be paid in clothing rather than cash (leaf 43). The 19th leaf considers the case of a man who finds his wife committing adultery "en flagrante delicto." Some relate to efforts in the Franciscan order to interpret the Rule of Saint Francis, which commanded the brothers to live in chastity and without property; the first leaf addresses the question of whether a friar who is infirm and unable to walk may travel horseback, even for a non-essential trip. However, other questions are addressed by Jesuits or Dominicans. Among the authors of opinions are the Jesuit Diego Diaz de Pangua (16th leaf), Francisco Nuñuz (18th), Manuel Rodriguez (3-9), Pedro de Hortigoza (13-17, 23-26, 42-45), Melchor Marquez Maldonado (32), Guillermo de los Rios (33-37), Juan de Salcedo, Rector of the Royal University (51), and Pedro de Audicana (56-59). Most sections are undated, but the 20th leaf is dated 1572, leaf 52 is dated 1587, and an October 1626 date can be found on leaf 60. Provenance: purchase circa 2000 from Philadelphia Rare Books & Manuscripts, which theorized that the volume may have been compiled by the Inquisition.
