(MEXICAN MANUSCRIPTS.) Miguel de Jesús María. Jesuit's letter warning that the new viceroy of New Spain was stranded en route. Autograph Letter Signed to prefect Tomás de San Cipriano in Mexico City. 4 manuscript pages, 12 x 8 1/4 inches, on one folding sheet; dampstaining and minor wear. Cadiz, 15 March 1716

  • Notes: Father Jesús María informed the prefect that the incoming viceroy of New Spain, Baltazar de Zúñiga, Marquess of Valero (in office 1716-22), was hopelessly stranded in Cuba, due to the sinking of the fleet off the coast of Florida, adding that the ill-fated ship La Francesilla, carrying 500 pesos to be delivered to the Jesuits in Spain, was recently "swallowed by the sea." Although he had sent numerous important letters to Mexico by various routes, and was himself planning a trip to Mexico shortly, he understood the risk of never reaching his destination.
Valero eventually did reach New Spain and had a noteworthy tenure as Viceroy, playing an important role in the colonization of Texas.
