(MEXICAN WAR.) Jones, Alfred, engraver; after Richard C. Woodville. Mexican News.

(MEXICAN WAR.) Jones, Alfred, engraver; after Richard C. Woodville. Mexican News. Engraving, 25 1/2 x 22 inches; minor edge wear and toning, a few small abrasions in image area. New York: American Art-Union, 1853

  • Notes: Citizens reacting to the latest news from Mexico on the steps of the American Hotel. Woodville's patriotic 1848 painting captured the excitement behind the young nation's first territorial conquest. An African-American laborer on the steps seems unable to muster the same enthusiasm.
