(MEXICAN WAR.) Thomas, George H. Letter home from the front at the conclusion of the Mexican War.

A FUTURE CIVIL WAR HERO SAVORS VICTORY IN HIS FIRST WAR (MEXICAN WAR.) Thomas, George H. Letter home from the front at the conclusion of the Mexican War. Autograph Letter Signed as a lieutenant in the 3rd United States Artillery, to brother John W. Thomas in Norfolk, VA. 3 pages, 9 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches, on one folding sheet, with address panel postmarked Brazos St. Jago on verso of final page; minimal wear. Buena Vista, Mexico, 28 May 1848

  • Notes: George Henry Thomas (1816-1870) served with great distinction as an artillery officer at Buena Vista and other battles of the Mexican War; he later became one of the Union's top generals in the Civil War, despite his Virginian heritage. This letter was written at the close of the war, and reports sarcastically on the ratification of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo by the Mexican government: "The treaty has been submitted to Congress by the President ad Interim, and the vote of the Deputies occurred at this place. It passed that body by a majority of twenty or more. . . . It is to be hoped for their sakes that their Senate will be equally magnanimous and give the northern barbarians an opportunity of leaving this land of magnanimity and refinement." He goes on to defend Winfield Scott: "Genl Scott has been persecuted most infernally and the whole army feels the insult as offered to it," but he hints at a different opinion of the current commander, General Wool.
