  • Notes: first edition. An important history of the intertwined stories of México City and the Virgin of Guadalupe, demonstrating how the great capital had been protected over the years from plagues and other calamities, most notably during the cholera epidemic of 1737. A table on page 511 shows the deaths in the city. The frontispiece depicts the Virgin's intercession, an image described by Mathes as "among the most important and striking engravings executed in New Spain" (Ilustracion en Mexico Colonial, 3752). 800 copies were printed, but almost half were burned by the order of the Viceroy.
