Antonio de León.

Order to reinforce the northern departments against the adventurers from Texas.

Oaxaca: I. Rincon, 30 November 1841
Letterpress broadside, 11 x 15½ inches, signed in type by General Antonio de León as interim governor of Oaxaca, and by José Esperon as secretary; folds, dampstaining on lower edge. Folded in a modern ¼ calf gilt slipcase.

  • Notes: Begins with an order by General José María de Tornel dated 11 November 1841:

"Not content with the criminal usurpation of that territory, the adventurers of Texas have armed the savage tribes to carry out bloody incursions against the towns of the bordering departments; they now seek to extend their depraved dominion to New Mexico and other regions; and have actively contributed to the continued separation of Yucatán from the national union. . . . Therefore, to restore order and peace, it is deemed essential to undertake a campaign and garrison the affected departments to ensure their defense."

This is followed by an order of the same date by Manuel Maria de Sandoval listing the required recruits by state, and noting that the departments of Texas and Yucatán are excluded from contributing men, as they are "withdrawn from obedience." The closing section by General de Leon sets forth the recruitment quotas for Oaxaca's 2000 men by district.  None traced in OCLC.
