Compendio, y sumario del edicto general de la Fé, y casos en él contenidos, a broadside prohibiting witchcraft, peyote and astrology.

No place, early 1700s
Letterpress broadside, 16¾ x 12¼ inches, on two conjoined sheets; folds, moderate edge wear including loss of one word; uncut.

  • Notes: A list of prohibited acts which would earn excommunication through the Inquisition. Though the place of printing is not stated, the prohibition of peyote in item 19 suggests that a Mexican audience was intended. #14 prohibits "Invocaciones de Demonios," and #18 covers the worship of demons and sacrifices done with the aid of candles and incense. #20 is concerned with exotic religious practices such as astrology, magic, and the sects of "Martin Lutero" and "Mahoma." #3 relates to those who follow "la Ley de Moyses."

This broadside went through several printings over the years through at least 1795, with a variable number of banned behaviors. This printing bans disobedience to King Philip V, placing it during his 1700-1746 reign.
