(MEXICO.) Group of 15 documents from the short-lived Republic of Yucatán. 4 manuscript documents, 2 broadsides, and 9 broadside newspapers; approximately 12 x 9 inches each; newspapers toned, otherwise generally minor wear. Campeche and Mérida, 1842-43

  • Notes: Yucatán declared independence from Mexico in 1841, and remained more or less independent through 1848. These letters and broadsides date from the dramatic period of the first Mexican invasion, which was repelled in April 1843. Includes: A pair of letters from Juan de Regil to Mauricio de Santelices of Havana regarding the political situation. Mérida, 17 and 24 January 1843 * Manuscript extract from a letter from an unknown Spanish national to Santelices, requesting assistance in leaving Yucatán due to the oppressive new tax. Mérida, 21 December 1842 * Autograph Letter Signed, Geronimo Ferrer y Valls (Spanish commercial agent in Yucatán) to the Captain General of Cuba in Havana, expressing concern for the safety of Spanish nationals in Yucatán. Campeche, 17 February 1843 * Printed broadside proclamation by President Miguel Barbachano, imposing a heavy tax on the nation's industrialists and merchants. Not in OCLC or Palau. Mérida, 2 December 1842 * Printed broadside titled "Opinion General, Verdaderas ideas y convicciones le las secciones del ejército del Estado acampadas extramuros de esta Ciudad." Not in OCLC or Palau. Campeche: José M. Peralta, 1843 * 9 issues of the Boletin del Espiritu del Siglo dated January to June 1843. Most with excellent content on resistance to the invasion by Mexico. The Boletin del Espiritu del Siglo (published in Campeche by José María Peralta) is quite scarce, with only one library holding copies per OCLC. We know of no copies at auction since the 1885 Porter C. Bliss sale.
