(MEXICO.) Group of satirical songsheets, most illustrated by José Guadalupe Posada. 21 illustrated broadsides and broadsheets, most about 11 1/2 x 8 inches, on variously colored newsprint; condition generally strong, with moderate wear or staining to a few. Mexico, 1880-1911 and undated

  • Notes: Many of these pieces satirize current news stories in verse, with a particular focus on crime and scandal, such as "El cancionero popular, núm. 2: Jesús Negrete, el tigre de Santa Julia" on the famous bandit, or "Terrible y verdadera noticia del espantoso ejemplar ocurrido con Norberta Reyes, que cerca de la ciudad de Zamora," on a woman who killed her parents. Most of these pieces credit Antonio Vanegas Arroyo as publisher. The renowned artist José Guadalupe Posada is not named, but is credited as the artist for most of these pieces by the Library of Congress and other institutions. Posada is best known for his calavera prints using skulls and bones, although these use different imagery. A complete list of all 21 pieces is available by request.
