(MEXICO.) Mayer, Brantz. Mexico; Aztec, Spanish and Republican.
AUTHOR'S WORKING COPY, WITH NOTES CREDITED TO ROBERT E. LEE (MEXICO.) Mayer, Brantz. Mexico; Aztec, Spanish and Republican. 2 volumes. 8vo, contemporary 1/2 morocco, minor wear; signed by the author on flyleaves. Hartford, 1851
-
Notes: first edition. Unique author's copy, interleaved with blank sheets after each page in preparation for his second edition. Clippings and pencil notes appear on 3 of these blanks (II:92, 226, 398), and several manuscript corrections appear throughout the first volume. Maps and plans are unbound, uncut on 5 leaves with marginal wear; lacks usual other plates. Palau 158998, Sabin 47100.
Found inserted in the first volume is a loose slip of notes, inscribed in another hand "Autograph notes of Col. Robert E. Lee USA, now General Rebel Lee." We offer no guarantees that this unsigned slip is actually in Lee's hand, but Lee had served with great distinction in the Mexican War and would have been a plausible candidate to offer this sort of critique of Mayer's work. The notes offer suggestions on Mayer's coverage of the war, some of which appear to have been followed. For example, the slip suggests that on page 394, the author check on "Time of arrival in front of Padiena." The proof copy emends the time from 3 p.m. to 1 p.m., a change which appeared in the 1852 second edition. -
