(MEXICO.) Padron general de las casas de Mexico, sus dueños y valores.

MANUSCRIPT PROPERTY CENSUS (MEXICO.) Padron general de las casas de Mexico, sus dueños y valores. [2], 525 manuscript pages. 4to, later mottled calf gilt, worn, backstrip chipped and crudely repaired with cello tape; front joint split, front flyleaf excised, dampstaining throughout in lower inside corner, with slight paper loss to last few leaves. Mexico, 1813

  • Notes: A list of every income-producing property in Mexico City, arranged by street, listing the present owner, and the income in 1813 and 1796. Some government buildings, churches, and hospitals are listed. Summary data and a table of contents are in the rear. The 10% tax on this income was likely raised by the colonial government in response to the Mexican War of Independence. It is apparently the oldest surviving property census of Mexico. Another manuscript copy is held by the Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía; it was published in 1903 as "Datos sobre rentas de fincas urbanas en la ciudad de México."
