(MEXICO.) Resignation of Viceroy Apodaca, Count of Venadito.

(MEXICO.) Resignation of Viceroy Apodaca, Count of Venadito. Letterpress broadside, 12¼ x 8½ inches, signed in type by "El Conde del Venadito"; minimal foxing and wear. In modern ¼ calf gilt folder. Mexico, 5 July 1821

  • Notes: After the Plan of Iguala, the territory controlled by Viceroy Juan José Ruiz de Apodaca, Count of Venadito was steadily shrinking. On 5 July 1821, one of his fellow royalists staged a coup and compelled him to resign. New Spain came to an end less than three months later. In this proclamation, Viceroy Apodaca resigns and passes authority to Francisco Novella. The first line reads "Entrego libremente el mando militar y político de estos Reinos." In translation:

"I freely hand over the military and political command of these kingdoms, at the respectful request made to me by the expeditionary officers and troops, for the better service of the nation, to Field Marshal Francisco Novella, with the only condition that the representative officers assure the safety of my person and family . . . and to be understood, in view of this cession I make, with the ecclesiastical, civil, and military authorities of the Kingdom."
