(MEXICO.) Tornel y Mendevil, José Maria. Early printing of the Guerrero decree abolishing slavery in Mexico.

(MEXICO.) Tornel y Mendevil, José Maria. Early printing of the Guerrero decree abolishing slavery in Mexico. Letterpress broadside, 12 x 8 1/2 inches, signed in type by Tornel as governor of the Distrito Federal, with embossed seal; stitch holes in left margin, one light fold. Mexico, 16 September 1829

  • Notes: Tornel publishes the 15 September 1829 decree by Vicente Guerrero, Mexico's Afro-Mestizo second president, which abolished slavery immediately: "1. Queda abolida la esclavitud en la república. 2. Son por consiguiente libres los que hasta hoy se habian considerado como esclavos. 3. Cuando las circunstancias del erario lo permitan se indemnizara á los propietarios de esclavos en los tárminos que dispusieren las leyes."
Slavery as an institution had been on a long decline in most of Mexico, with the very important exception of the growing Anglo-American colony in Texas. The abolition of slavery was one of the grievances which led Texans to fight for independence. This printing, ordered the day after the decree, has not been traced at auction, in Palau, or on OCLC.
