Mexico, 1830-1832
2 volumes, including a total of 115 periodical issues and supplements.

  • Notes: "Voz de la Patria." 20 non-consecutive issues (each 8 pages) from Volumes IV and V plus 3 supplements, in one volume. [196] pages. 8vo, modern calf gilt; moderate worming; uncut.
México: Alejandro Valdes, September 1830 to October 1831.

This journal was edited by the historian and journalist Carlos María de Bustamante (1774-1848). The 26 January and 1 February 1831 issues include a long description of Mexico by a foreign visitor. A 9 February 1831 supplement blames hostilities on the northern border on "our northern neighbors, who seek to take advantage of our situation to pursue their longstanding aims of seizing Texas." The 2 March 1831 issue decries the large numbers of hostile indios who had been driven over the border by the United States. This volume includes the final issue of "Voz de la Patria," a supplement dated 18 October 1831 headed "Ultimatum."

"El Fénix de la Libertad." 86 (of 97) issues from Volume I plus 6 supplements in one volume. 4to, contemporary ½ calf over marbled boards, minor wear, crude repair to front board; minimal wear to contents. Mexico: Agustín Guiol, December 1831 to September 1832.

Fénix de la Libertad was a newspaper founded in opposition to the Anastasio Bustamante government, led by reformer Vicente Rocafuerte (1783-1847) and others. It supported Antonio López de Santa Anna. This volume begins with Issue No. 3, and covers Santa Anna's rebellion against the Bustamante government. The 14 December 1831 and 20 June 1832 issues include articles praising the industriousness and prosperity of the United States. The 4 August 1832 issue includes communications from the Department of Tejas, stating that "nearly all the colonies of that department are in insurrection, with large gatherings taking place to attack the authorities and detachments in Anahuac and Brazoria; and that the unsettled state of those settlements could compromise the integrity of the Republic's territory."

Bound in after the 22 September 1832 issue is a 12 August 1832 report by General Esteban Moctezuma to General Antonio López de Santa Anna, comprising two pages of text and three tables on the strength of the Army's Second Division.
