Michael Ellison was born in New York City in 1952, but is known as a Georgian artist. He received his BFA from the Atlanta College of Art (now the The Art Institute of Atlanta) under the GI Bill, where he learned printmaking. He earned his MFA in visual arts from Georgia State University in 1983. He is known for his printmaking and developing a style of thickly applying layers of ink that created a rich surface texture with bright colors. Shawnya Harris, curator of African American and African Diasporic Art at the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia describes Ellison's work as "...an important piece to the discussion of not only African American printmakers, but also the history of Georgia-based printmakers, their unique narratives and their contributions to the medium." Ellison taught art at South Caroline State College, Claflin College in South Carolina and Atlanta College of Art.
