MICHAEL HAGUE (1948 - )
O inital cap, "Once long ago . . . "

Ink and watercolor on board, 1980. 165x155 mm; 6½x6 inches. Initialed in lower right image.

Publication
Initial cap for page 1 of East of the Sun, West of the Moon, retold by Kathleen and Michael Hague (New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1980).

  • Notes: An intricately detailed initial cap illustration of a troll in the Hagues' retelling of the classic Norwegian folk tale. The "O" begins the story's opening line: "Once long ago there lived a husband and his wife and their seven children." The image consists of the final published illustration, as well as an earlier version of the letter alongside it. Appropriately for a classic fairy tale, Hague masterfully channeled the likes of John Bauer and Arthur Rackham in the book's imagery.
