Middleton, Thomas (d. 1627)
The Spanish Gipsie.

London: Printed by T[homas] C[hilde] and L[eonard] P[arry] for Robert Crofts, 1661.

Second edition, quarto, a large unwashed copy with headlines and bottom lines intact; bound in modern half blue morocco; contemporary signature and list of plays (no longer present) on ffep; ex libris Borowitz, sold as part of lot 158 at the 1978 sale; 7 1/4 x 5 1/4 in.

Wing M-1987; Greg 717 (b*); ESTC R4641.

The plot for the play is based on Cervantes's La Gitanilla, (The Little Gypsy Girl), a short story from his collection of novellas. In the story, a nobleman falls in love with the titular character, who challenges him to live with her family under an alias for two years. It contains themes of female empowerment and undermines socio-economic and class stereotypes.
