(MILITARY--CIVIL WAR.) Confederate receipt for the use of "Tom," a slave, in the fortification of Richmond. Partially printed document, 3-7/8x5-1/2 inches accomplished by hand; printed on lined paper; evenly toned. Signed in print by W.H. Stevens. Lynchburg, October 1, 1863

  • Notes: Signed by Colonel W. H. Stevens, who was placed in command of the Richmond defenses by General Lee. Stevens was rounding up slaves to help fortify the defenses. He was supposedly the last uniformed man to cross Mayo's Bridge on the night of the evacuation of Richmond.
