(MILITARY--CIVIL WAR.) DRAFT RIOTS. Report of the Committee of Merchants for the Relief of Colored People, Suffering from the Late Riot

WITH EYE-WITNESS ACCOUNTS (MILITARY--CIVIL WAR.) DRAFT RIOTS. Report of the Committee of Merchants for the Relief of Colored People, Suffering from the Late Riots in the City of New York. 48 pages. 8vo, original self-wrappers; spine reinforced with archival paper; text foxed with a few chips to the fore-edges of the front cover. New York, 1863

  • Notes: A scarce account of the bloody New York draft riots. The draft was basically unjust economically. If you could afford the $300 ($5300 is today's dollars), you could opt out of service--or perhaps you could find someone to take your place. The reaction was the largest insurrection in American history. And, of course the blame for both the War, and the draft, was placed directly on the heads of blacks. White gangs came tearing through black neighborhoods, hanging people from lamp posts. It took over 800 federal troops and cannon fire to put down the rebellion. The present is one of the best accounts of the events of July 13th through July 16th.
