FORT WAGNER AS SEEN BY CONFEDERATE OFFICERS (MILITARY--CIVIL WAR.) JONES, COL. CHARLES COLCOCK, HON. LIEUT. COL. H.D.D. TWIGGS, ET AL. Defense of Battery Wagner, July 18th, 1863. 30, [1] pages. 8vo, original printed wrappers. A fine copy of a fragile piece. Augusta, GA: Chronicle Publishing, 1892

  • Notes: a rare collection of confederate accounts of the attack of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteers on Fort Wagner. These three officers were present at what is properly known as "The Assault on Battery Wagner." The attack opened with salvos from Union warships meant to prepare the way for the landing of troops; while Confederate canon returned a steady rain of fire. "The whole island shook . . . words fail to convey the fury of this bombardment," said Colonel Twiggs . "The 54th Massachusetts, leaving half their number dead and wounded on the field, broke and fled in confusion. . . . The loss of life was terrible; the brigade commander Gen. Strong and Colonel Chatfield, of the 6th Connecticut were mortally wounded. Col. Shaw of the 54th Massachusetts, was killed outright."
