(MILITARY--CIVIL WAR.) Pair of muster rolls from the Louisiana Native Guard, which became the 76th United States Colored Troops. Partially printed manuscripts signed by various officers and soldiers, each 2 pages, 21 x 31 inches; separations at folds with early tape repairs, other minor wear. Fort St. Philip, LA, 31 August 1863

  • Notes: These muster rolls list the members of Companies G and I of the 4th Louisiana Native Guard or Corps d'Afriques, which later became the 76th United States Colored Troops. They were stationed at Fort St. Philip and Fort Jackson, located across the Mississippi River from each other near Triumph, Louisiana, far south of New Orleans. Each roll lists dozens of men, the dates of their enlistments, their pay, and their signatures. The vast majority of the Black enlisted men signed by mark, with the exception of Sergeants George C. Smith and Kinsey Dinsfield of Company G, and James Blanton of Company I. Many of the soldiers have additional remarks on their absence: in the hospital with illness, on detached duty at the Signal Station or as boatman for the quartermaster, for example. One sergeant was "detailed on extra duty in charge of contrabands." In Company G, 8 soldiers are listed as having deserted, and 5 as having died during training in Baton Rouge. In addition, the civilian servants attached to each company office are named.
